Who are the Freeman Family?
The concept for a Duke center for Jewish Life was born many decades ago and was nurtured by numerous Duke students, alumni, parents, administrators and friends. Brian and Harriet Freeman, parents of three Duke alumni, made the generous gift to Duke University which enabled the Center to finally be built. The Freeman Center for Jewish Life at Duke bears their name in appreciation for their generosity that allowed the vision to finally be brought to fruition.
Today Brian and Harriet’s three children Amanda ‘97, Danyelle ‘96 and Heath ‘02 continue their parent’s legacy of support of Duke and in particular Jewish Life at Duke. Amanda, Danyelle and Heath serve on the Jewish Life at Duke Advisory Board.
We can’t believe it has been 10 years since a great many people’s hard work and vision was manifested in what we now know as the Freeman Center for Jewish Life. We are proud of the commitment that individuals like our parents made to giving Duke and its students this home for so much more than just Jewish life.
Every time we walk into the building, we are reminded of the contribution that the building and programming have made to student life at Duke University. Whether through Kosher dining, High Holiday services or educational programming, we are thrilled to see students taking advantage of the building. We remember a Duke without a home for Jewish life and are struck by the impact the building has had on current students and recent alums.
We appreciate the hard work of the administrators, faculty and students that have given their time, dedication and passion to sustaining a community that stands in honor of our parent’s gift. We look forward to the next 10 years and continuing to watch the center become ever more ingrained in the Duke experience.
